Neo-Lithics welcomes contributions from researchers working on the Pre-Pottery and Pottery Neolithic of Southwest Asia. Submissions are open continuously, reviewed individually, and published online as soon as they are accepted.

Continuous publication

From 2026, Neo-Lithics operates on a continuous, rolling-submission basis. There are no submission windows or volume deadlines. Each contribution is reviewed as it arrives, and accepted papers are published online as soon as the review and copy-editing process is complete. The annual printed volume is then assembled at the end of each year from the papers that have appeared online during the preceding twelve months.

Scope

Neo-Lithics publishes work on the Pre-Pottery and Pottery Neolithic of Southwest Asia. Important connections with adjacent regions are also considered for publication on a case-by-case basis. We welcome contributions on archaeological topics and methodology, as well as on directly related questions of material analysis, environment, and chronology.

Contributions are accepted in English. Non-native speakers are kindly asked to ensure their text has been read by a native speaker before submission.

What we publish

Field reports

Preliminary or interim accounts of recent fieldwork — excavations, surveys, surface collections, and re-analyses of legacy material.

Short paper series — new discoveries

A new format for sharing fresh findings from active fieldwork in concise form, typically three to five pages with up to five figures. Intended for circulating first results and provisional interpretations before full publication elsewhere.

Survey reports

A dedicated section for survey results, which often struggle to find a home in field-report-oriented venues. Submissions undergo full peer review on the same basis as research articles.

PhD and early-career research highlights

Summaries of recently defended doctoral theses, snapshots of dissertation work in progress, and short presentations of early-career research projects. We particularly welcome contributions from authors before, during, or shortly after the completion of their PhD.

SW Asian Neolithic Dialogues

A discussion-based format inviting scholars — including PhD candidates and early-career researchers — to engage in debate on theoretical, methodological, and material questions in Southwest Asian Neolithic research. Dialogues appear as evolving series of responses, with new contributions every several months.

Special issues and thematic series

Proposals for special issues and thematic series are warmly invited, especially from conference organisers and guest editors who would like to bring a coherent set of papers together under a single theme.

Book reviews and conference reports

Reviews of recent monographs and edited volumes, and accounts of recent conferences, workshops, and sessions of relevance to the field.

Review process

All submissions are first read by an editor and either returned with comments, sent for peer review, or — in the case of straightforward formats such as conference reports and brief notes — accepted directly with editorial copy-editing.

Peer-reviewed contributions are sent to two reviewers, internal or external, selected for their expertise on the specific topic of the manuscript. The editorial team coordinates revisions and the final acceptance decision.

Authors at any career stage may request voluntary editorial mentoring during preparation of a manuscript; this is offered in particular to first-time authors.

Detailed style and length specifications are being updated by the new editorial board and will be published here in due course. Until then, the existing ex oriente / Heidelberg–Propylaeum guidelines remain a useful reference.
