About
Neo-Lithics has appeared since 1994 as the principal newsletter for active research on the Pre-Pottery and Pottery Neolithic of Southwest Asia, published by ex oriente e.V., Berlin.
The publication
Neo-Lithics was founded in 1994 by Hans Georg K. Gebel and Gary O. Rollefson as a forum for short field reports, work-in-progress notes, and discussion among researchers working on the Neolithic of Southwest Asia. Across more than three decades it has published field news, special-issue volumes, conference reports, and editorial commentary on the state of the discipline.
Neo-Lithics moved to fully open-access online publication in 2018, and from 2021 to 2025 was hosted on the Propylaeum eJournal platform of Heidelberg University Library. From 2026, under a new editorial team, Neo-Lithics is hosted independently at neo-lithics.org and moves to a continuous, rolling publication model — accepted papers appear online as soon as they are reviewed and edited, with the twelve months of accepted papers compiled each December into the annual volume. We are also exploring ways to bring Neo-Lithics back into printed format alongside the open-access online edition.

Publisher and hosting
Neo-Lithics is published by ex oriente e.V., Berlin — an independent scientific association devoted to interdisciplinary research and transnational cooperation in the study of human cultural development in the prehistoric Near and Middle East. Between 2021 and 2025, online hosting was provided by the Propylaeum eJournal platform of Heidelberg University Library, to whom we remain grateful for their support during that period. From 2026, Neo-Lithics is hosted independently at neo-lithics.org, with individual articles deposited in the Neo-Lithics community on Zenodo for persistent open-access archiving.

ISSN 1434-6990 (print). A new eISSN for the neo-lithics.org edition is being registered; a persistent DOI is assigned to each article on deposit at Zenodo.
